A contractor quoting a water heater replacement here works out the fuel situation before anything else, because it decides what venting the new unit needs and whether combustion air is adequate for the space. Fuel oil or kerosene heats more occupied homes in Cumberland County, Maine than any other fuel, at 45.6% (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Oil and kerosene combustion produces exhaust that has to be handled differently than gas, and an installer who skips that assessment and sizes on capacity alone leaves a system that cannot vent safely. The fuel type also limits which replacement units are permitted, so the scope of a job is settled by what is already burning in the home.

Older service panels in this county were built around loads that look nothing like a modern water heater's draw. Half the homes in Cumberland County, Maine were built in 1976 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a water heater installation here checks the panel before anything else, because undersized service is what stops a job or reprices it, and that finding comes from opening the box, not from reading the permit date on the wall.

What Gets Installed With a New Water Heater

The tank or tankless unit is the heart of the installation. A storage-tank water heater sits in a utility room, basement, or closet and holds a ready supply of heated water. A tankless unit mounts to a wall and heats water only when a fixture calls for it. Either way, the contractor sets the unit in place and connects it to the home's cold-water supply line and hot-water output line.

A pressure-relief valve mounts directly on the unit and acts as a safety release if pressure inside climbs too high. A discharge pipe runs from that valve down toward a drain. On gas-fired units, a flue pipe exits through a wall or roof to carry exhaust out of the house. Where the water supply enters the unit, shutoff valves give the homeowner a way to isolate the system without touching anything else.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what the installation involves in your home.
