A water heater in a fuel oil home here does more than handle hot water. Fuel oil or kerosene heats more occupied homes in Maine than any other fuel, at 55.3% (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). When a single fuel carries the heating load for most of the state's occupied homes, the burner, the ignition system, and the flue are cycling continuously through the cold months, and the cumulative wear on those components arrives well ahead of what a manufacturer's estimate assumes. A contractor quoting a replacement reads the existing unit's condition against that actual load, not against a national average.
A quote for a new water heater starts with what is already in place: the electrical service at the heater's location, the pipe configuration, and whether the space around it was built to accommodate current equipment dimensions. None of that can be read from an address. Half the homes in Maine were built in 1977 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house that has had its plumbing touched once or twice may have connections that work fine with a new unit, while a house that looks tidy from the outside may have a panel that requires an upgrade before the install can go forward. The contractor has to open it up and look.
How does your Maine county compare on severe weather?

A heavier storm record is worth factoring into how a water heater is installed and maintained. Power outages, flooding and falling ice or limbs are all things outdoor and basement equipment can be exposed to during severe weather. Have a contractor check where the water heater sits, how exposed it is to water intrusion, and whether its power and venting connections are secure.
